Righteous but defeated?

Can you be righteous and live life defeated?

If you are living your life in sin, are you still considered to be righteous? Or if you living in fear as if God has not blessed you in your coming in and your going out? Before the death of the Lord Jesus Christ, you had to live life perfect to qualify for righteousness, but after the death of the Lord Jesus Christ, what is required is to receive Him and His righteousness.

The righteousness of God is a gift, the righteousness of faith, not of works. If righteousness is a gift and not something we work for, then this means that no matter how much you sin, you are still righteous right? Pastor Prince, in his sermons about this topic, always makes a point to establish the fact we should not use our righteousness as an excuse to sin. People have disputes over Romans 5 verse 20:

20 Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more, 21 so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 5

But in the next chapter, Apostle Paul speaks against the idea that we should be okay to sin now because we are righteous and know we can never lose our righteousness. Grace super-abounding, where sin abounds, is not a call to go crazy, there are other ways to receive His grace. Jesus has so much grace, yet He never sinned, and as He is, so are we. This all comes down to our nature, if you are a new creation in Christ, righteous through Him, you do NOT enjoy sinning. And not just because of your conscious attacking you, but because you know what it cost Him to set you free.

6 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? 3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

Romans 6

When you understand how much Jesus loves you, you want to live for Him and just thank Him for what He has done for you. The truth is, when you get saved, there are still a whole lot of behaviors and habits from your old life that you will see in your new life. That is why the Bible in Romans 12 says that you need to renew your mind. And as you grow more and more in the knowledge of God’s love for you, you are changed from within.

I beseech[a] you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your [b]reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Romans 12

Apostle Paul experienced something that I think all of us experience at one point or another in our faith journey. And he said it was only in the fact that there is therefore now no condemnation in Christ that he was saved from it all. Like him, what we want to do, we do not do, but what we don’t want to do, that we do, it’s a part of our of journey once we are saved. Only Jesus was perfect enough to live the Christian life.

15 For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do. 16 If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree with the law that it is good. 17 But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. 18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. 19 For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. 20 Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.

Romans 7

When you understand God’s love for you, it changes your heart and makes you want to be closer to Him. It makes you want to please Him and give glory to Him in all that you do. And I am not talking about living in self condemnation and being sin conscious, I am talking about turning your heart over to God, while knowing that only He can change you. God is love, and as you learn more and more about His love, and behold Jesus more, you are transformed into His image from glory to glory.

If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in Him

1John 2:15

So maybe you don’t think you deserve His love because of your actions, but where is your heart at? Understanding His love will change your heart, which will change your actions. I am not saying change your actions now because while we look at a man’s actions, God looks at the heart. We love because He first loved us, so the more you know of His love, the more you love Him. All you do comes out from your heart.

23 Above all else, guard your heart,
for everything you do flows from it.

Proverbs 4

Right believing leads to right living. Think about this, if you believe you are going to hell anyway, will you even trust Him to change you and live through you?

Remember, we reign in life through Christ, not through our own efforts. It is no longer I that lives but christ through me.

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you[a] free from the law of sin and death.

Romans 8

So I believe you can be righteous, but still struggle to live your life the way you want to live it in Him. And for you to change your old habits, you need trust God, rest in the fact the Spirit who is in you has set you free and there is therefore now no more condemnation. He who is forgiven much, will love Christ much.

47 Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.”

Luke 47

So if you are not reigning in life, you are obviously defeated, right?

There are two examples I can give now that I learned through Pastor Prince where a righteous man lived in defeat, one, for his whole life, and the other, in moments he strayed from the path.

The first example is that of Lot.

7 and delivered righteous Lot, who was oppressed by the filthy conduct of the wicked 8 (for that righteous man, dwelling among them, tormented his righteous soul from day to day by seeing and hearing their lawless deeds)

2 Peter 2

Here is a devotional where Pastor Prince talks about this- Which Righteous Man Do You Want to Be.

Lot lived in an environment where he ended up suffering and losing everything that was precious to Him. And he did not learn his lesson the first time when Sodom was attacked, instead, Lot went back and lost even more, when God destroyed Sodom, because he was chasing a lifestyle that had nothing to God.

Another righteous man who went through things that could have probably been avoided was Jacob. When God told him to go back to the land of his fathers, he settled somewhere else instead and ended up with his daughter being abused and his sons slaughtering a whole village of men.

He was probably afraid of meeting his brother who he had stolen the first born blessing from. So he did not obey an instruction from God and ended up running away from another place in fear again, even though He had a promise from God to protect Him and provide for him. And in one sermon, Pastor Prince also talks about how Jacob unknowingly spoke a curse upon his favorite wife, Rachel.

32 But as for your gods, see if you can find them, and let the person who has taken them die! And if you find anything else that belongs to you, identify it before all these relatives of ours, and I will give it back!” But Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen the household idols.

Genesis 31

We know that Rachel died later and did not get to see her children grow up- the power of a righteous man’s tongue anyone? Careful what you say about yourself.

So can you live life as a defeated righteous man?

Unfortunately, yes.

Firstly if you don’t know, or you never acknowledge your righteousness in Christ, and that He loves you, you can live life defeat.

Secondly, following after the things of the world will take down a path you will not like in the end, don’t fall into that trap.

Thirdly, listen to God, follow His leading when He speaks to you, He knows what is best for you and will never lead you astray. Taking your own route might just lead you to more troubles that you can handle.

And lastly, watch what comes out of your mouth, instead of speaking curses and death upon yourself and others, speak grace, speak kindness, speak righteousness.

Death and life are in the power of the tongue,
And those who love it will eat its fruit.

Proverbs 18

I don’t know about you but I want to be more like Abraham, and not Lot. The Bible tells me I am blessed with believing Abraham, I am not going to willingly give that up for anything.

So I am going to hold on to all His promises in the book of Proverbs about the wellbeing and the character of the righteous man; while bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and confessing that I am righteous in Him.

You will probably still face challenges, even Abraham has his own share of challenges, but you will never be defeated because you know Who is on your side and what He has promised you. No weapon formed against shall prosper, and every tongue that rises up against you shall condemn for your righteousness is from Him.

No weapon formed against you shall prosper,
And every tongue which rises against you in judgment
You shall condemn.
This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord,
And their righteousness is from Me,”
Says the Lord.

Isaiah 54:17

God loves us, let’s hold on to that love and grow in it. The more you understand God’s love, the more you become more of that righteous blessed man that Abraham was. The more you know His love, the less of the love of the world you have in you. The more you know His love, the more you can follow His direction without fear. The more you know His love, the more the words that come out of your mouth will be changed into words of blessings.

Make it a priority to grow in His love, and grow more and more into the blessed, victorious righteous man you are meant to be.
